This is the all new MG HS Hybrid!

The MG HS Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) made a grand entrance at the 2024 Goodwood Festival of Speed, celebrating MG's centenary in spectacular fashion. Fireworks lit up the day AND the night sky, marking a century of innovation for this British automotive icon. Eight years after SAIC brought MG back to the UK market, the brand has gone from strength to strength, and the latest HS PHEV is no exception. But what exactly has changed, and how does this new model improve upon its predecessors?

Advanced Technology and Features

MG has equipped the 2024 HS PHEV with a suite of modern technologies designed to enhance both safety and convenience. The standout feature is MG Pilot, a comprehensive driver assistance package that is standard across all trims.

This system includes:

  • Adaptive Cruise Control – Maintains a safe distance from the car ahead, adjusting speed automatically for a more relaxed motorway drive.
  • Lane-Keep Assist – Helps keep the vehicle in its lane, even on winding country roads.
  • Traffic Jam Assist – Manages acceleration and braking in stop-start traffic, reducing driver fatigue.
  • Automatic Emergency Braking – Provides an extra layer of safety by stepping in to prevent potential collisions.
  • Blind Spot Detection & Rear Cross-Traffic Alert – Perfect for city driving and parking in tight spots, helping avoid unseen obstacles.

The Trophy trim goes even further with a front parking sensor, making manoeuvring in car parks effortless. With all these safety features in place, the MG HS PHEV offers peace of mind whether you’re navigating bustling city streets or heading out on an extended journey.

Performance and Efficiency

Under the bonnet, the HS PHEV pairs a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor, delivering a combined 258PS and 370Nm of torque. This allows for a nippy and responsive drive, even when the vehicle is fully loaded for a road trip. With a zero-emission electric range of up to 32 miles (WLTP), shorter journeys can be completed without using a drop of petrol, making it an excellent choice for urban commuters looking to lower their fuel costs and carbon footprint.

Charging the battery is straightforward, with a Type 2 charging cable included as standard. Using a home wall box, the HS PHEV can be fully recharged in around 4 hours, meaning it’s ready to go by the morning after an overnight charge.

Interior Comfort and Technology

Inside, MG has designed the HS PHEV to be both spacious and high-tech. The 12.3-inch digital driver display provides clear, real-time information, while the 10.1-inch infotainment system supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, ensuring seamless smartphone integration. Heated seats add a touch of luxury, making long journeys more comfortable, especially during the UK's colder months.

Another highlight is the MG iSMART system, which allows drivers to access live traffic updates, locate their parked car, and even pre-condition the cabin temperature via their smartphone – a particularly handy feature in winter.

Setting Off to the Cotswolds

With the HS PHEV fully charged and packed and ready for adventure, we hit the road, heading towards the Cotswolds. This picturesque region, famous for its rolling hills, honey-coloured stone cottages, and historic market towns, provided the perfect backdrop to put MG’s latest hybrid SUV through its paces.

Verdict After Part One of Our Road Trip

The MG HS PHEV proved to be an outstanding road trip companion, offering the perfect blend of performance, practicality, and eco-conscious driving. Its combination of electric efficiency and hybrid power allowed us to explore the Cotswolds in style while keeping running costs low.
