Peugeot expands deal for assembly of compact cars in MalaysiaFiled under: Budget, Plants/Manufacturing, Peugeot
Peugeot has signed an agreement to expand its production relationship with the NAZA Group in Malaysia. NAZA started assembling the previous generation B-segment 206 hatchback in 2006 and will be adding a sedan version of the current 207 late this year. In the second quarter of 2011, Peugeot and NAZA will add a sedan version of the larger C-segment 308 to the production schedule.
Because of Malaysia's membership in Association of South East Asiatic Nations (ASEAN), Peugeot and NAZA will be able to export vehicles to other member countries without paying exorbitant tariffs. Production will take place at NAZA's factory in Gurun, 250 miles north of the capital of Kuala Lampur.

While some automakers are diversifying, others are consolidating. Like Peugeot, for example, which is preparing to replace both the 407 and 607 with an all-new 508. The big sedan is set to debut in a couple of months at the biennial Paris Motor Show, but after spy shots found their way to our desks a couple of weeks ago, this first batch of official-looking images have already leaked their way out and are circulating the interwebs as you read these words.
Previewed by the 5 by Peugeot concept at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show and based on sister-company Citroën's C5 sedan, the new 508 has appeared in both sedan and wagon formats. Full details will undoubtedly be released sometime in the next couple of months as the Paris salon approaches, but in the meantime Francophiles can check out the images in the gallery below for a closer look. Thanks for the tip, Mono!

PSA Peugeot-Citroën already sells its wares in China and has a joint-venture with Dongfeng, but has now added another joint venture partner in a €395 million ($499M U.S.) 50-50 tie-up with Chang'an Automobile Group. The union will eventually have cars like the Citroën DS3 and the company's engines and light trucks built in the country, using two current Chang'an factories, renovating one more and building another.
The difference in the two joint ventures is that Dongfeng makes and markets cars under the Peugeot and Citroën brands. Peugeot-Citroën and Chang'an, however, are creating a third brand together. What kind of vehicles that third brand will sell hasn't been disclosed. With Dongfeng and Chang'an, Peugeot-Citroën will have 650,000-vehicle production capacity in China, but Peugeot is considering raising it's 450,000-unit capacity with Dongfeng. The French company sold 176,000 cars in China through June, a 49% jump over last year.

#1 Peugeot 908 powers through the night at Le Mans - Click above for high-res image gallery
This year's 24 Hours of Le Mans was shaping up to be a second straight flag-to-flag romp for the Peugeot 908 diesels, right up to the point where they all started dropping like flies. Needless to say, the Peugeot Sport engineers have taken a long, hard look at why all four cars failed to finish - and in the case of three of them, it basically comes down to perfect race conditions leading them to be running too fast.
The first car to go out was the #3 entrant that was built up from the tub that won the 2009 race. After two-and-a-half hours of racing, a suspension mounting point separated from the carbon fiber tub as the result of an undetected structural problem.
The other three cars all went out later in the race with what turned out to be an identical connecting rod failure. A combination of circumstances led to all of the cars running faster this year and putting increased stress on their engines. Not mentioned by Peugeot in its report is the fact that the new Audi R15+ ran considerably faster in 2010, pushing the Peugeots to the limit. At the same time, cool temperatures and a grippy track, blended with air-to-air intercoolers that didn't clog up as much as they did in the past led to more air going into the combustion chamber. More air means more power and an increased load on the pistons - especially late in the race. No doubt Peugeot will be looking to increase its safety margins as the engineers prepare their all-new 2011 challenger.

According to La Voz de Galicia, the French automaker is currently mulling the creation of a new sub-brand to break into the lower rungs of the inexpensive car market. Rather than go through the hassle of rustling up a whole new name, the company has looked to the past for inspiration. It came up with Talbot - a company that got its start early in the 20th century and puttered to a stop in 1986.
The name has a history of rising from the dead. In 1978, Peugeot pulled a similar stunt by bringing the Talbot name back from obscurity after Chrysler axed it a decade prior. During the revival, the brand mostly served as a dumping ground for former Chrysler Europe models. Needless to say, the resurrection didn't last long.
But if our Google Translator is to be believed, the most recent zombification of the Talbot moniker will have more to do with funky little entry-level machines than any sort of rebadging exercise. La Voz de Galicia claims that the brand will likely start off with just two models based loosely on existing Peugeot models, which would be manufactured at the Citroën factory in Vigo.
Is it possible? Sure. But the rumors could just as easily be smoke and mirrors. Thanks for the tip, Lucian!

Given the timing, we're guessing the new 508 sedan will get its world premiere at the Paris Motor Show in September and then go on sale late this year or in early 2011.
The 508 will likely share most of its underpinnings with the Citroen C5 and be powered by range of engines, starting with a gasoline 1.6-liter inline-four,and topping out with a 3.0-liter 240-horsepower diesel V6. The 508 is also expected to be available with Peugeot's new Hybrid4 through-the-road hybrid system.
This uses an internal combustion engine with a conventional transmission at the front wheels and an electric motor and battery for the rear axle. It's mechanically simpler than power-split systems like those from Toyota, and it offers on-demand all-wheel-drive.

Peugeot 908-HY hybrid prototype - Click above for high-res image gallery
On Thursday, June 10, the Automobile Club de L'Ouest (ACO), which organizes the 24 Hours of Le Mans, held its annual press conference and announced new technical regulations for the 2011 event as well as the European Le Mans Series. The ACO has long encouraged a variety of powerplant configurations, which is what prompted first Audi and then Peugeot to develop diesel-powered prototypes. 2011 will bring the official introduction hybrid power to Le Mans racing in all of the new classes.
Next year the club will move even further in the direction already pioneered by the American Le Mans Series with its "green racing" initiatives. The top LMP1 class will adopt what are essentially the current LMP2 rules, with gasoline racing engines limited to 3.4 liters normally aspirated or 2.0 liters turbocharged. Diesels can displace no more than 3.7 liters. The current LMP1 cars will be allowed to compete in 2011, but performance will be restricted by as-yet-unannounced means that will likely include more weight and smaller air restrictors. Check out the rest of the changes after the jump.

Peugeot 908 HDi qualifying for Le Mans 2010 - Click above for high-res image gallery
Qualifying for the 24 Hours of Le Mans is getting quite predictable, with the big question being which of the Peugeot 908s will come out on top. After three timed sessions over two days, the No. 3 Peugeot of Pedro Lamy, Sebastien Bourdais and Simon Pagenaud came was quickest as the four French diesels filled the first two rows on the grid. Right behind them are the three factory Audi R15+ TDIs and then the two Aston Martin-Lolas.
Down the field in the LMP2 ranks, the Honda powered ARX-01c campaigned by UK-based Strakka racing lapped the eight-mile circuit 1.46 seconds faster than a similar car being run by defending American Le Mans Series champs Highcroft Racing. 2010 is the final year of eligibility for the GT1 class at Le Mans and Aston Martin hopes to go out in style. The DBR9 driven by Tomas Enge, Christoph Nygaard and Peter Kox edged out a pair of Ford GTs and the ex-factory GT1 Corvettes.
In GT2, ALMS regulars ruled the roost. The No.82 Risi Ferrari ran fastest but its time was disallowed because of an unknown technical infraction. As a result, the two Corvette C6.Rs will lead the GT2 field to the green flag with Oliver Gavin, Olivier Beretta and Emmanuel Collard on the pole. Unfortunately for the JaguarRSR team, the cool green-and-black leaping cat livery has not translated into much speed with the XKR finishing dead last in qualifying, nearly 13 seconds slower per lap than the lead Vette. The green flag falls at 3PM CET on Saturday, so stay tuned.

Earlier this year, the Automobile Club de l'Ouest (ACO) announced the formation of the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup that would feature races in Europe, North America and Asia for what is essentially a sports car racing world championship. For this year, the cup includes only three races, with the North American round being the Petit Le Mans in October.
Come 2011, the cup expands to seven races and will include the 24 Hours of Le Mans and both the Sebring and Petit Le Mans events in the U.S. Peugeot has already committed itself to competing for the 2010 cup and Audi has said it is considering participating. The other 2011 races will be at Spa in Belgium, Silverstone in England, Fuji in Japan and a circuit in China.
The ACO also announced that it would follow the American Le Mans Series and eliminate the GT1 class in 2011 in favor of GT2 as well as bringing in a new generation of LMP cars.

2011 Peugeot 308 GTi - Click above for high-res image gallery
As Europe's second largest automaker, it's no great secret that France's PSA has got the Volkswagen Group squarely in its sights. As if the on-track rivalry between Peugeot and Audi in Le Mans racing weren't enough, the Lion brand recently launched its offensive against the likes of the Vokswagen Scirocco and Audi TT in the form of the RCZ coupe. Now the French are taking another shot, this time against the Volkswagen GTI with... their own GTi.
Not only is the name the same (save the discrepancy of the lower-case I), but the specs follow a similar formula as well: The VW packs a 2.0-liter turbocharged four with 200 horsepower. The Peugeot? A 1.6-liter turbocharged (and direct-injected) four with - you guessed it - 200 horsepower. Even torque is also on a (relatively) level playing field, with the Volks offering 207 lb-ft and the Pug 202. The heavier Peugeot, however, takes 7.7 seconds to get up to highway speed, compared to the seven seconds flat it takes the Volkswagen.
The engine in the 308 GTi - co-developed with BMW - is the same that debuted on the RCZ, this time powering a five-door hatch and mated to a six-speed manual. There are other suspension, aerodynamic and trim upgrades to differentiate the 308 GTi from its bread-and-butter stablemates, more of which you can read about in the press release after the jump and view in the gallery below. The ultimate question is, after listening to its customers and doing an about-face on its plans to get out of the hot hatch game altogether, does the Peugeot deserve the GTi badge? Leave your thoughts in the comments section below.

Mitsubishi, Citroen and Peugeot have announced a partnership that should have a new small SUV in French show rooms by early 2012. The Japanese automaker has agreed to share its ASX platform with PSA Peugeot Citroen in an effort to move more models for everyone involved. Mitsubishi says that while it is providing the bare bones for the project, respective models from the two European automakers will incorporate unique bodywork as well as their own engine.
While the French-Japanese creation will use a 1.6-liter diesel four-cylinder culled from the PSA Citroen Peugeot parts bin, buyers will be able to choose between front-wheel and four-wheel drive models.
The partnership should move an additional 50,000 platforms out of Mitsubishi's doors and onto the streets of Europe. PSA Peugeot Citroen believes the small SUV segment will explode in the near future, with sales leaping by as much as 60 percent by 2015. Hit the jump to see the full press release.

Citroën Nemo on its tippy toes - Click above to watch the video after the break
We've recently had two shining examples of the importance of having a properly functioning electronic stability control system (ESC) in new vehicles. The instability of the 2010 Lexus GX 460 is a known problem and Toyota is working to address it. The Lexus was equipped with ESC, it just wasn't effective enough. Over in Europe, the Citroën Nemo failed miserably in a test conducted for a British consumer magazine because it lacked ESC entirely.
Which? is something of a British counterpart to Consumer Reports and had recently worked with German auto club ADAC to evaluate a trio of compact MPVs from Fiat, Peugeot and Citroën. The Qubo, Bipper Teepee and Nemo all share the same basic design, but only the Italian variant offers ESC as an option (and then only on diesel models). The Peugeot and Citroën do not offer ESC at any price. Needless to say, the results on the dreaded "moose test" (also known as the "elk test") were not good. This particular test is a double lane change obstacle avoidance maneuver at 50 miles per hour.
After the Citroën Nemo flipped over in this test, the remaining testing of the Peugeot was abandoned. PSA, the parent company of the automakers, has announced that it will start installing ESC on the Nemo and Bipper diesel models in July of this year. A version for gas engined will have to be developed and installed starting in fall 2011. Video of the test is after the jump.

Just in time to celebrate its bicentennial next month, Peugeot is expanding its diesel-powered racing efforts. The French automaker will compete in the 24 Hours of Nürburgring for the first time this May with a pair of its new RCZ coupes. The Nürburgring race has become increasingly important in recent years, as automakers have begun to use it as a venue to do final prove-out of new performance oriented cars.
For this years race Peugeot will bring a pair of nearly stock 2.0-liter HDi FAP RCZs with 200 horsepower to the mighty 'Ring. The only modifications to the cars are the removal of unnecessary equipment like audio systems and the addition of race safety equipment like roll cages, fire suppression, upgraded brakes and a rear wing. The four man driving crew for each car will consist of a mix of pro-drivers and Peugeot staff including PSA vice-chairman Stéphane Caille.

PSA Peugeot Citroën have announced that it will spend €175 Million to tool up one of its engine plants to build a new turbocharged inline-three cylinder engine. The Douvrin engine plant will have a capacity of 320,000 powerplants per year starting in early in 2013. The 1.2-liter engines will join a normally aspirated version that debuts one year earlier.
While PSA is one of the world leaders in diesel engine technology, this new engine is a gasoline-fueled unit. The high-volume commitment to a downsized gasoline engine is a sign of the increasing difficulty of meeting both new carbon dioxide emissions standards and nitrogen oxide standards that are part of the Euro VI package.
While PSA has no current plans to sell either Peugeot or Citroën vehicles in the United States, we are likely to see some three cylinder units coming from other automakers in the next few years including BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen and possibly Ford with a rumored 1.2-liter Ecoboost.

Ze Germans may be known for their efficiency, but try this on for size: French automaker Peugeot is gearing up to replace two sedans with - wait for it - just one! Feigned enthusiasm aside, this is the one that stands to take the job, and it's a pretty sharp looking sedan.
More telling, however, though dubbed a concept car, the 5 by Peugeot looks fairly close to production-ready status, especially compared to design studies like the RC HyMotion4 concept, another four-door concept from Peugeot unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in 2008. Oh, and we're disregarding the lack of any interior on this show car.
We expect a production version of the 5 by Peugeot to replace both the 407 and 607 within the next couple of years. In the meantime - particularly since Peugeot doesn't market in North America - you can take a closer look in the gallery below.

When we first saw the Peugeot SR1 Concept, we were less than impressed. Why? The press photos just didn't do the car any justice. But here in person at the Geneva Motor Show, the SR1 Concept has us drooling. First of all, the proportions are spectacular. Long hood, short deck, wide, low - just a great, potent stance coupled to classic proportions. Also, this here Peugeot is one of the rare convertibles that looks just as good top on or off.
There's a boat load of fancy tech that comes with this concept car (all of which you can read about here). The long story told short is the SR1 Concept is a turbo-diesel hybrid that makes 313 total horsepower and gets 48 miles per gallon. It also has a four-wheel-drive, through-the-road HYbrid4 tech, The plastic roof uses sailboat technology and the instruments are displayed via crystal tubes. But as most of the SR1 Concept's bells and whistles won't ever see production, we'll just go ahead and enjoy this stunning show car for what it is: beautiful.

Despite the ridiculous name, the "5 by Peugeot" concept is the inspiration for the next 508 sedan, Peugeot's competitor the Ford Mondeo and Vauxhall Insignia.
Coming in at 191.3 inches long and 74 inches wide, with a wheelbase of 110 inches, the 5 by Peugeot is rather staid looking compared to the French automaker's previous offerings. Aside from the overly-stylized headlamps, the front fascia looks surprisingly production ready, incorporating a massive front air dam with a combination of brushed aluminum accents and a chromtastic grille. Out back, it's pure Peugeot, with taillights that stretch into the rear quarter panels, an Insignia-esque trunk and dual exhausts.
Underneath the marque-specific hood bulge lies a 163 horsepower 2.0-liter HDi FAP diesel which, combined with a rear-mounted, 37-hp electric motor, brings output up to 200 hp. The system, dubbed Hybrid4, sends power to all four wheels and, according to Peugeot, will allow the new 508 to run on electricity alone for an unspecified range. Naturally aspirated gasoline engines are expected to be included on the all-new 508 when it hits the market, and judging by the near-production ready exterior, we'd expect Peugeot's new midsizer to arrive in European dealers late this year or in early 2011. Make the jump for all the details and check out the gallery below for a host of high-res images.
