Peugeot exiting Le Mans racing effective immediatelyFiled under: Motorsports, Earnings/Financials, Peugeot
PSA Peugeot Citroën has announced the French automaker will leave Le Mans racing indefinitely. Reuters reports the manufacturer cites financial issues as the reason for the drastic move, saying Peugeot will now focus its efforts on improving its sales performance in 2012. For its part, Peugeot has issued an official statement confirming the development on its motorsports site, which you can read after the jump.
Peugeot is currently Europe's second-largest vehicle manufacturer, though the company has suffered a string of thinning profit reports in recent months. Last year, Phillippe Varin, Peugeot's chief executive, announced a plan to save the company $1.03 billion in 2012 through a variety of tactics, including 6,000 job cuts. We now know the company's impressive Le Mans racing effort is a casualty of cost savings as well.
Of all the rivalries in motorsports, few have been as entertaining or heated as the one that blossomed between Peugeot and Audi at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Peugeot swiped the crown from its German rivals in 2009 with its futuristic, diesel-powered 908 prototype, though Audi has won the legendary race seven out of the last eight years. That loss, however, forced Audi to abandon the open cockpit design of its R15 and earlier models in favor of a closed dome on the new R18.
Interestingly enough, Reuters reports Peugeot sister company Citroën won't turn its back on the World Rally Championship.Continue reading Peugeot exiting Le Mans racing effective immediately Peugeot exiting Le Mans racing effective immediately originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 18 Jan 2012 11:52:00 EST. Auto Shows, Peugeot, Citroën, Design/Style
Citroën and Peugeot have released the first volley of information and images on their refreshed C1 and 107 runabouts. The Citroen C1 will bow with a new face, complete with a shorter hood, redesigned foglamp housings and new LED daytime running lights. The vehicle's rear valance has also received a few design touches to differentiate it from the previous year model. Buyers can expect to find the same 68-horsepower three-cylinder gasoline engine bolted to a manual transmission under the hood.
Not surprisingly, its mechanical twin, the Peugeot 107, has received a similar once over. Designers have graced the three-door with a reworked front fascia that features a new front bumper, foglight housings and LED daytime running lights, just like its Citroën cousin. Peugeot will also offer the 107 in three trim levels: Access, Active and Allure.
The Citroën C1 will be on display at the Brussels Motor Show starting on January 10, and it's probably fair to assume the Pug will make the scene there as well. Hit the jump for press releases on both of these small hatchbacks.Continue reading Citroën C1 / Peugeot 107 twins refreshed Citroën C1 / Peugeot 107 twins refreshed originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 05 Jan 2012 14:29:00 EST. Superminis are big business for European automakers, and Peugeot has just released its latest salvo in the form of its new 208.
Available in both three- and five-door body-styles, the 208 represents a complete overhaul of the French carmaker's core model. Its wheelbase is the same as the 207 it replaces, but while overall exterior dimensions have shrunken, Peugeot says interior volume has increased.
Meanwhile, weight has decreased, and the new 208 range is motivated by a pair of 1.0- and 1.2-liter gasoline engines with about 75 and 100 horsepower, respectively, designed to replace the 207's 1.4 and 1.6 models, with a range of five diesel engines paired with stop-start ignition and hybrid assist on most models to return exceptional fuel economy and emissions figures.
The new Pug range is certainly distinctively styled, particularly the three-door shown above, with its sculpted doors and unusual chrome trim flourish at the rear of the windowline (a treatment not shown on the family-oriented five-door). The interior is no less interesting, with unusual ambient lighting elements on select models and a premium-look dashboard.
Peugeot is also expected to roll out a 208 GTI based on the three-door that promises to channel much of the beloved 205 GTI hot hatch's sporting characteristics in the new form. That may still be a year away, but for now, you can check out the standard models in the high-res image gallery and the press release and video after the jump.Continue reading Peugeot tackles supermini market with new 208 [w/video] Peugeot tackles supermini market with new 208 [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 02 Nov 2011 12:30:00 EST. Ford just announced that it lost $100 million a month in the market over the third quarter, and PSA Peugeot-Citroën SA didn't fare much better.
Automotive News reports that the French auto conglomerate is looking to cut fixed costs by 800 million euros ($1.1 billion USD) next year, and job cuts will be part of the plan. PSA will reportedly terminate 6,000 European jobs next year, with 1,000 cuts to manufacturing, 2,500 lost contractors and another 2,500 from sales, marketing, research and IT.
The auto market in Europe has suffered from a rise in pricing pressures. PSA felt the pinch with a 1.6 percent drop in automotive revenue during the quarter. Overall revenue actually increased by 3.5 percent due to PSA's majority ownership of parts maker Faurecia SA. PSA has changed its outlook for 2011 from "clearly positive" to something closer to break even.Peugeot-Citroën chopping 6,000 jobs in Europe originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 28 Oct 2011 11:00:00 EST. Diesel propulsion isn't anything new in Le Mans-class endurance racing. Hybrids are still a rarity, but even when Toyota returns to Le Mans with a hybrid LMP1 next year, it won't be alone. That's because Peugeot is preparing to chart new territory with the 908 Hybrid4.
The latest evolution of the 908 prototype incorporates a competition version of PSA's Hybrid4 system, which uniquely pares a diesel engine with electric assist. We first saw the new racer in Geneva last March, but the 908 Hybrid4 has now undergone its first shake-down test at the Estoril track in Portugal that once hosted the Portuguese Grand Prix and continues to host the Six Hours of Estoril in the Le Mans Series.
Test-driving duties were performed by Nicolas Minassian, Stephane Sarrazin and Alex Wurz, who report that the added boost from the hybrid drivetrain was already evident in the 300 kilometers (186 miles) of testing at the circuit. Follow the jump for the full press blast and click on to the gallery for a pair of fresh images from the test added to the initial studio shots.Continue reading Peugeot begins track-testing 908 diesel hybrid Peugeot begins track-testing 908 diesel hybrid originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 20 Oct 2011 18:01:00 EST. French automaker Peugeot has had an interesting back and forth lately when it comes to its flagship model. The big 607 sedan was discontinued a couple of years back due to lackluster sales, replaced by the new 508 that also succeeded the smaller 407 sedan. Then reports began sprouting up that the Lion marque was planning on turning that into a crossover wagon similar to the approach taken by Audi with the A6 Allroad or Volvo with the XC70.
We figured that's what we were looking at when the company unveiled the 508 RXH diesel hybrid in Frankfurt, but at the same time Peugeot also showcased the HX1 concept - a sort of luxury crossover that was more similar in concept to the Mercedes-Benz R-Class than the Audi Allroad.
Now the rumormill suggests that Peugeot could put the HX1 into production as its new flagship model, sitting above the 508 and its high-riding RXH counterpart. PSA's adaptable Hybrid 4 drivetrain could offer nearly 300 horsepower driving all four wheels through a combination of internal-combustion and electric motors. And while we're just spitballing here, if sister-company Citroën moves ahead with plans to produce the Metropolis concept, parent company PSA could have a business case on its hands.Peugeot to produce HX1 flagship luxury crossover? originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 17 Oct 2011 18:02:00 EST. The spotlight at the Peugeot stand here in Frankfurt was directed on one limited edition Peugeot 508 RXH and the French automaker's HX1 concept. But alongside the copper-colored crossover and sleek MPV was the less-exclusive, non-limited version of the 508 RXH.
Peugeot says all 508 RXH crossovers feature the automaker's through-the-road HYbrid4 technology, which employs a 163-horsepower 2.0-liter HDi diesel engine to drive the front wheels and a 37-hp electric motor to spin the rears. Combined, the diesel-electric hybrid drive unit delivers up to 200 horsepower and cranks out 332 pound-feet of torque.
The 508 RXH is capable of electric-only operation, though Peugeot has not yet revealed the crossover's "zero-emissions" range. The automaker says the 508 RXH is quite the fuel-sipper, consuming less than 4.2 liters of diesel per 100 kilometers (56 miles per gallon U.S.) on the combined cycle. Meanwhile, the diesel hybrid emits only 109 g/km of CO2.
The 508 RXH will go on sale in spring of 2012 and Peugeot says its HYbrid4 technology will be added to more vehicles in the near future. Under design guru Gilles Vidal, Peugeot is starting to show off its an adventurous maturity, as seen in the HX1 six-seat concept revealed today at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show.
Powered by the Peugeot's through-the-road HYbrid4 technology and using a 2.2-liter HDi diesel instead of the automaker's 2.0-liter oil burner, the HX1 combines good power - 299 bhp - with astonishingly low fuel consumption of 73.5 miles per gallon equivalent (U.S.) and CO2 emissions of only 83 grams per kilometer. And with its plug-in capability, Peugeot says the HX1 features a useful electric-only range of 18.6 miles.
Design-wise, the HX1 concept features a windscreen pulled so far to the front that it's more "cab-in-the-next-country" than "cab forward." Add in a quartet of unusual scissor doors and the HX1 takes most elements that make up a typical MPV and, well, reinvents them.
What's truly ingenious in the HX1 are its second-row seats, which literally pull right out of the back side of the front seats.
Outside, trick aerodynamic elements deploy at speed, off the rear of the HX1 and from the wheels. Follow the jump for more details on the HX1 including a video, then check out the concept's wizardry in our high-res image gallery.Continue reading Peugeot HX1 concept is one unusually sleek plug-in MPV [w/video] Peugeot HX1 concept is one unusually sleek plug-in MPV [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 14 Sep 2011 14:00:00 EST. Peugeot has released a few images of its HX1 Concept car ahead of the vehicle's debut at this year's Frankfurt Motor Show. The low-slung MPV can seat up to six adults while retaining a remarkably low drag coefficient of just 0.28. That's thanks to a few clever design tricks like wheel blades that open up to form a flat surface, as well as some clever side skirt and spoiler work.
As you might expect, that's not the only show-circuit wizardry that the HX1 has to offer. Occupants enter and exit via five rear-hinged half-scissor doors. Additionally, a center row of seating can be created by a set of pull-out buckets integrated into the front seats.
Not surprisingly, the HX1 gets its power from a plug-in hybrid drivetrain. A 204-horsepower 2.4-liter turbo-diesel engine provides power to the front wheels while an electric motor takes care of spinning the rear tires. All told, the vehicle produces 299 horsepower while returning 88.2 miles per gallon. You name it, Kimi Raikkonen has raced it. When the 2007 World Champion tired of Formula One, he switched to the World Rally Championship. When that got boring, he tried his hand at NASCAR. And now he could be gearing up for an assault on Le Mans.
The opportunity is reportedly coming from no less capable at team than Peugeot, the only team to beat Audi since the turn of the millennium (excluding Bentley, which raced with Audi's support). According to Autosport, the Finnish driver is set to test their 908 prototype with an eye towards possibly driving for the team at Le Mans next year. Kimi himself is quoted as saying he wouldn't want to compete at the solitary event without running other endurance races in order to practice, but working the races into his WRC and NASCAR schedule could prove tricky.
Raikkonen wouldn't be the first F1 driver to drive for Peugeot. In recent years the team's roster has included such former grand prix pilots as Jacques Villeneuve, Sebastien Bourdais, Pedro Lamy and Alex Wurz. Were he to win, however, he would be one of only a handful of drivers to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the Formula One World Championship (as well as the Monaco Grand Prix, for that matter), joining the elite company of Graham Hill, Mike Hawthorn, Phil Hill and Jochen Rindt, and placing him as a serious contender for the elusive Triple Crown of Motorsport.Kimi Raikkonen to test Peugeot 908 for possible Le Mans drive originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 24 Aug 2011 09:30:00 EST. Toyota Motorsport GmbH has announced its intention to smash the existing electric vehicle lap record at the famed Nürburgring Nordschleife on August 29.
Some speculate the on-track demonstration by Toyota Motorsport GmbH is a prelude to Toyota's racing division inking a powertrain deal for an electrified Formula 1 racing series. Whether or not that's true remains unknown, but Toyota says its lapping of the Nürburgring will prove that "green thinking motorsport" generates emotion, just as fossil fuel racing has done for more than a century.
The current electric vehicle lap record at the 'Ring stands at 9:01.338, a time that Toyota says it has already beaten during informal testing. On August 29, it will hit the track with a battery-powered two-seater that can reach a claimed top speed of 162 miles per hour, rip from 0-60 mph in 3.9 seconds and is loosely based on the radical Alpha-1 SRF, a vehicle developed by Toyota Motorsport GmbH for the German firm e-Wolf.
Rob Leupen, Toyota Motorsport's director of business operations, told the Charging Point, "We are extremely confident we can break the record by some distance, which is an indication of how electric vehicle performance is continuously improving." We'll let you know if Toyota's attempt to tame the 'Ring blows a hole through the existing record, which is held by the spectalur Peugeot EX1.Continue reading Toyota shooting for electric vehicle 'Ring record on August 29 Toyota shooting for electric vehicle 'Ring record on August 29 originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 08 Aug 2011 18:31:00 EST. The 2012 Peugeot 508 RXH diesel-electric hybrid has been officially revealed ahead of its world debut at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show in September.
Featuring all-wheel drive via Peugeot's HYbrid4 technology, the 508 RXH comes packing the automaker's 2.0-liter HDi diesel engine with a 28-kilowatt (38-horsepower) electric motor. This system, identical to the one found in Peugeot's 3008 Hybrid4, makes the 508 RXH a so-called "through-the-road" hybrid vehicle. Combined, the diesel-electric hybrid drive unit delivers up to 147 kW (200 horsepower) and cranks out 332 pound-feet of torque.
The 508 RXH can operate in electric-only mode, though Peugeot has not revealed the vehicle's "zero-emissions" range. The French automaker say the 508 RXH consumes less than 4.2 liters of diesel per 100 kilometers (56 miles per gallon U.S.) in the combined cycle and emits 109 g/km of CO2.

Top Gear's Jeremy Clarkson gets a push in a Nissan Leaf - Click above to watch the video after the break
It would seem that the guys from Top Gear are back to giving electric vehicles the what-for. According to The Lincolnite, James May and Jeremy Clarkson were respectively spotted piloting a Peugeot iOn and a Nissan Leaf through England during a cross-country trek (which is exactly what electric cars are for, right?).
The duo stopped by Lincolnshire County to ask about the nearest place to charge their alternative-fuel steeds, only to find that the entire municipality is bereft of chargers. Apparently May and Clarkson then set about driving around the city until their vehicles died and they were forced to get a tow.
If this all sounds familiar, that's because Top Gear rustled up a mess of snakes the last time Clarkson jumped behind the wheel of an EV. After depicting the Tesla Roadster as suffering a brake failure and running out of power, Tesla shot back refuting what happened as pure fiction. That little dust-up has yet to settle.
The truth is that the vast majority of people come to Top Gear to be entertained, and most viewers probably realize that there's plenty of editing that goes into each segment. We seriously doubt that most EV buyers use the UK show as a go-to resource, but that doesn't stop the constant ragging on alternative fuels from growing trite.

The second round of the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup took place in Belgium, and even though the Audi R18 took to the starting line for the first time, Peugeot was able to take the top two spots on the podium after six hours of racing.
Interestingly, the qualifying results were the opposite of the race results: Audi racers occupied the first three positions on the grid, and although a Peugeot 908 was in fourth, it wasn't a team car, it was that of the Oreca squad. Due to an incident-strewn and red-flagged qualifying session, the first Peugeot Sport Total car was back in 13th, the second was in 18th, and the third wasn't even classified and started at the back of the grid.
In the race, however, it was Audi's turn for bad juju. The pole-sitting car spun at the first corner on the first lap, one of the drivers accidentally hit the pit-lane speed limiter button during the race, unscheduled stops for new tires and collisions ate away at their positions. Come the checkered flag, team Audi rallied to take third, fourth, and fifth positions, but first and second went to The Lions - that second-place car being the one that started at the back of the grid.
Even with the copious amounts of shenanigans pre-race and in-race, the results aren't totally surprising: Peugeot has a knack for emerging victorious at Spa - this was the team's fifth consecutive win in the Ardennes. Despite the lack of pressure from the French oil-burners, this is a strong debut showing for the new Audi R18 racers. For decades now, automakers have turned to the famed Nürburgring in Germany to put vehicles to the test. On April 27th, Peugeot sent its radically styled EX1 electric 'round the 'Ring, setting a record for battery-powered vehicles with a time of 9 minutes 1.338 seconds.
The Nürburgring actually consists of several interlacing tracks, with the main stretch, the Nordschleife, comprising almost 13 miles of hairpin turns, undulating surfaces and lengthy straightaways.
Peugeot's electric sports car averaged a rather impressive 85.9 miles per hour on the demanding 12-plus mile Nordschleife track. The Peugeot EX1 has whirred its way into the record books by lapping the 12-mile Nürburgring Nordschleife with a 9:01.338-minute run. According to Peugeot, that shatters the previous electric vehicle record at the track by an impressive 50 seconds.
The fully-electric Pug, which debuted at the 2010 Paris Motor Show, averaged 85 mph on its record-setting run. Peugeot has promised to release photos and video of the EX1 at the Nordschleife, but for now we'll have to wait.
The lightweight, four-wheel drive EX1 was created to celebrate Peugeot's 200th birthday, and packs a pair of electric motors (one on each axle) totaling 340 horsepower. As for production, don't hold your breath, though the technologies on display in the EX1 and lessons learned during its development will likely influence future models.

Much as it is for any other automaker, the Chinese market is a high priority for Peugeot. The French automaker is committed to rolling out a new product in the Asian nation every year, and as such, will be rolling in to the Shanghai Motor Show next week with the sexy concept you see here.
The SCX crossover concept wasn't just designed for Shanghai, it was designed in Shanghai as well, at Peugeot's local design studio. The shape bears the hallmarks of contemporary Lion-badged show cars but in a svelte crossover shape that's shorter in both length and height but wider than a BMW X6.
Drivetrain comes courtesy of Peugeot's HYbrid4 system, mating a 218-horsepower 1.6-liter turbodiesel four driving the front wheels to a 95hp electric motor at the back for through-the-road all-wheel-drive and a combined output of 313hp. The concept is joined at the Shanghai expo by the 508 sedan that will now be manufactured locally for the Chinese market. Details in the press release after the jump with photos in the gallery below.

The auction on Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's 1977 Peugeot 504 officially closed earlier this week with winning bid of $2.5 million. The funds are set to be used to build housing for low-income families. According to MSNBC, Iran's Wellfare Organization, which organized the auction, hasn't released the name of the Pug's new owner, though there is some indication that the vehicle will be displayed in a museum in the near future. Locally, the vehicle would likely carry a price tag of around $2,000 without its unique ownership history. Ahmadinejad was frequently seen using the vehicle while he was Mayor of Tehran, but the Iranian President has favored other transportation since he took office in 2005.
According to MSNBC, Ahmadinejad campaigned on the promise to house every Iranian, and the charity auction is an attempt to make good on that pledge. Interestingly enough, outside of Iran, the most visitors to the auction's website came from right here in the good ol' USA.
