Karman Ghia Golf Convertible

The car itself

It seemed to be a week of purchasing classic Golfs first the Champagne Green 1983 Golf, then David and I bought a Matt black cabrio Mk1 for yet another cool price 310. After buying both of these cars and having the fun idea of getting them back. We decided to keep a car each.

The black Golf was bought from a guy in Portsmouth, about as far as we could ever go, as south as we can get without driving into the sea. The Golf was in good external condition, the engine... erm well this was the problem... Portsmouth purchase

The radiator and cooling system seemed to not be connected, as in the water bottle went into a hose then into the engine then the radiator, but then it didn't go anywhere. Therefore we filled her with water and 2 mins later the car had run dry. We decided to stop at Gosport Shell garage and call the AA and wait for relay.

This is where we started a proper evaluation of the Mark 1 Golf, the body was very solid, the exhaust was blowing a little. Anyway, the car we realised was a Karmann Ghia therefore worth buying, but for some reason the chrome had been ripped off from the bottom of the doors, and the centre of the car.

The Interior

The Golf was lacking door panels, well kind of they were carboard cutouts real slick, the seats were the wrong ones, not the half leathers just a kind of Mk2 Golf GL style seat. The windows kind of worked , they went down but on a kind of angle,. Then when David was moving the car he clipped his garage wall and potted the passenger window. The Hood was generally in an ok condition a few dodgy repairs, but the worst part was the inner liner some muppet had sprayed the cream, black and it was flaking off. You would of thought that who ever sprayed or painted would realise when you fold the rooof up or down the paint would crack, but no.
