Production Aston Martin V12 Zagato headed for Kuwait revealFiled under: Coupe, Performance, Aston Martin, Specialty, Middle East, Luxury
A howling red prototype of the Aston Martin's V12 Zagato made the international rounds last year, and now the first production example is headed for a Middle East reveal at the Kuwait Concours d' Elegance (running February 15-18). Only 150 of the super-exclusive Astons will be made for worldwide consumption.
Aston Martin hasn't released any new photos so we don't know how the 510-horsepower, £330,000 (that's $550,000 U.S., before taxes), aluminum-and-carbon-bodied coupe will differ from its progenitor. If the model on display at the 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show is an indicator, though, future owners have much to look forward to.
We'll know more in a few weeks, so until then, feast your eyes on the attached photo galleries and read the press release after the jump.Continue reading Production Aston Martin V12 Zagato headed for Kuwait reveal Production Aston Martin V12 Zagato headed for Kuwait reveal originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 29 Jan 2012 15:03:00 EST. If Aston Martin wants to make a sexy commercial, there probably doesn't need to be that much thought involved. All the ultra luxury brand needs to arouse the typical auto enthusiast is a collage of shots of the company's Vantage, Rapide or DB9.
That didn't stop Aston Martin from stocking its latest video creation with women, however, but it's not what you think. Hit the jump to watch Aston's 87-second-long featurette, which is titled "Aston Martin Loves Women. Women love Aston Martin."
The spot illustrates that women don't need a mini skirt to be featured in an exotic luxury car commercial, and that you don't have to be a guy to appreciate automotive beauty. And while the DBS rolling through the majestic twisties is a real looker, it's the sound bites that really get us going. Aston Martin may love women, and women may love Aston right back, but men are rather fond of 'em, too.Continue reading Aston Martin loves women, women love Aston Martin Aston Martin loves women, women love Aston Martin originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 19 Jan 2012 16:58:00 EST. It's amazing what a company like Aston Martin can do with what essentially amounts to two product families. Discounting the Toyota-built Cygnet and the exclusive One-77, the company's entire line-up is based around either the Vantage or the DB9. While the latter has also spawned the Virage, the DBS and the Rapide, Aston has also done a lot with the former. There's the V8 Vantage, the Vantage S, the V12 Vantage and even the exotic V12 Zagato - not to mention countless racing versions.
And then there's the convertibles. Aston offers open-top versions of just about all of these (save, once again, the Cygnet, One-77 and Rapide). All that's been missing is a V12 Vantage Roadster, and now word has it that Aston's got that one in the pipeline for the near future, too.
The formula is pretty simple: taking the mechanical bits from the V12 Vantage coupe and fit the folding fabric roof mechanism from the V8 Vantage Roadster and presto! an open-top twelve-cylinder roadster. And with 510 horsepower on tap, it should make for one heck of a wild ride. We're told to expect it's arrival as soon as the Geneva Motor Show this coming March, so stay tuned.Aston Martin V12 Vantage Roadster coming to Geneva originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 16 Dec 2011 10:45:00 EST. What makes an Aston Martin an Aston Martin? Well, it has to be made by Aston Martin, to start with. But just what does that brand stand for? Performance, on the one hand, and luxury on the other, because Aston Martin doesn't exactly build extreme supercars, it crafts luxury GTs with prodigious levels of performance capabilities on tap.
And then there's the Cygnet. Mechanically the same as the Toyota iQ on which it's based, the Cygnet packs less than 100 horsepower - the next model up in the Aston Martin catalog has more than four times that. But Aston is keen to demonstrate that the Cygnet still offers the same levels of exclusivity, elegance, luxury and fine craftsmanship as its bigger brothers.
Whether it succeeds in convincing is up to you, so check out the pair of videos after the jump to see for yourself.Continue reading New Cygnet videos attempt to show that supermini is worthy of Aston Martin name New Cygnet videos attempt to show that supermini is worthy of Aston Martin name originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 15 Dec 2011 19:59:00 EST. Spell it with two Es and the name Beetle is intrinsically linked to Volkswagen. Drop that second E for an A, though, and you're looking at another 60s icon altogether. While the VW might not hold much sway for music buffs, the Beatles and its individual members hold plenty of interest for car fans.
If it's not John Lennon's '65 Ferrari 330 GT going up for auction, it's a special one-off Mini painted by George Harrison. This time around, though, it's Harrison's Aston Martin that's garnered our attention.
This 1964 DB5 belonged to Harrison back in the 60s and was just sold at auction for well above its estimated value. After a fierce bidding war under the auspices of Coys in London, the classic Aston went to an unnamed collector from Houston, Texas for £350,000 (equivalent to $547k at today's exchange rates) - a good £150k ($235k) more than expected.
At those prices, the new owner may be whistling "baby you can drive my car", but is more likely to hide his love away in a climate-controlled garage somewhere. It seems to us like Aston Martin never tires of rolling out ever hotter renditions of its Vantage sports coupe. As if the original V8 Vantage weren't enticing enough, Aston then shoehorned a V12 under the hood. Zagato then rebodied what we already thought was one of the shapeliest beasts on the market. And the improvements just keep on rumbling in. But then there's the racing versions. Oh, the racing versions!
The N24 showed us what it meant to take beauty to the beast that is the Nürburgring. Then came the GT4 racing model, followed by the even hotter GT2. The category in-between used to be tended to by the DBRS9, but now Aston's opted to replace it with yet another competition version of the Vantage.
First teased back in April, Aston revealed further photos and details of the V12 Vantage GT3 in August, and the British marque has now commenced track testing of its latest racing machine. Packing a 6.0-liter V12 with more than 600 horsepower and enough wings and ducting to make a fighter jet blush, the new Vantage GT3 has already covered a thousand kilometers of shakedown running while gearing up to take on series like the FIA GT3 championships, the Blancpain Endurance Series and the VLN Nürburgring series.
Like what you see? There's a fresh pair of images we've added to our gallery, and a whole mess of specifications in the press release after the jump, so check 'em out and start dreaming of racing glory.Continue reading Aston Martin gets to work on new V12 Vantage GT3 Aston Martin gets to work on new V12 Vantage GT3 originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 25 Nov 2011 14:25:00 EST. Aston Martins often prove capable of tangling with the likes of Ferraris and Lamborghinis. But one thing that sets them apart is that, while their Italian counterparts often place their engines amidship, Astons are always front-engined. Right?
Well, discounting their Lola-built LMP1 Le Mans racer, everything that rolls out of the factory in Gaydon - much as they did before at Newport Pagnell - has its engine up front, even with supercars as exotic as the One-77, V12 Zagato and Vanquish. That's where HBH comes in.
The Danish firm, as we initially reported back in May and followed up on in July, takes its initials from the last names of its brain trust: Jesper Hermann, Christian Brandt and Torben Hartvig, who between them have a wealth of niche supercar experience to impart. For their latest project, the trio teamed up to produce the vehicle you see here: the Aston Martin Bulldog GT.
Aside from the engine being place behind the cabin, the Bulldog GT features unique aluminum bodywork that looks suitably Aston-like and accommodates placing the engine in the middle. And in case the 6.0-liter V12 lifted from the Vantage weren't powerful enough, HBH has bolted on two superchargers to boost output up to 666 horsepower. That's said to be enough for a 3.9-second run to 62 mph and a 186-mph top end, but we wouldn't be surprised to find those numbers conservative.
Perhaps the most intriguing bit is that HBH is not just selling the car, but half of its production rights along with it. That means the buyer can choose whether to keep it as a one-off or put it into limited production and reap the rewards. Sounds like an interesting business model to us. Take a closer look at the finished product in our gallery of images and draw your own conclusions.HBH reveals final design for mid-engined Aston Martin Bulldog GT originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 09 Nov 2011 14:31:00 EST. The chief executives of any two companies will inherently have something in common to share. All the more so for the CEOs of automakers, never mind how big or how small. But Akio Toyoda and Ulrich Bez share more than job descriptions. The heads of Toyota and Aston Martin also share a passion for motorsports and actively race themselves.
It's a relationship helped broker the deal to turn the Toyota iQ into the Aston Martin Cygnet. It's one that has seen not only their teams but they themselves compete against each other in sports car racing. It's also one that only stands to intensify next season in endurance racing when both field LMP1 racers. But before that happens, the two pencil-pushers turned hot shoes swapped cars at the Nürburgring, Toyoda taking to the wheel of the Aston Martin V12 Zagato, and Bez piloting the Lexus LFA. Special orders departments are nothing new for upscale automakers. These specialized divisions allow carmakers to offer their customers a level of personalization over and above the usual catalog of colors and options. But what Aston Martin is doing with the new Works Tailored department goes one step further. Or should we say, one big step backwards into the company's history.
With the new Works Tailored department, Aston Martin will give the owners of its vehicles - whether factory fresh, slightly used or veritable classic - the opportunity to have specialized work performed, including unique colors, materials and finishes, on any Aston no matter how old or new.
It's part of an extensive expansion plan at Newport Pagnell - the historic home of Aston Martin that, until the 2007 move to Gaydon, was the company's principal factory, and is now home to its Works Service department that has offered factory-level service to Aston owners since 1924. The plans also include a factory dealership to sell Astons old and new direct from the manufacturer. There are lots of watchmakers out there leveraging their automotive partnerships with special edition timepieces, but few of them are as convincing as the series Jaeger-LeCoultre produces for Aston Martin. And there are few we'd rather have on our wrists.
Most of the AMVOX series are inspired by Aston Martin road cars - some even have transponders to open and close the doors - but this latest example pays tribute to Aston's victorious racing program. The AMVOX5 LMP1 packs JLC's 41-jewel Caliber 752 movement with chronograph and GMT functions, so you can time your hot laps at circuits from Suzuka to Sebring, La Sarthe to Laguna Seca, plus a date window and 65-hour power reserve.
The precision movement is housed in a 44-milimeter ceramic-titanium case, affixed to the wrist with a calfskin and Cordura strap, all decked out in the team's blue and orange livery. We got a chance at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show to see one of the 250 examples that will be offered before the press embargo lifted, and were tempted to race off with one of our own. As varied as the cars that James Bond has driven in the various 007 movies, few have proven as inseparable from the Bond image as Aston Martin. But what of the boats? Bond's watercraft have ranged from hovercraft to submarines, Sunseeker speed boats to megayachts and even naval ships. But one designer has sought to bridge the gap with the Aston Martin speed boat you see here.
Called the Voyage, this 55-foot speedboat design is the vision of naval architect and Aston Martin owner Luiz de Basto, who has several Magnum yacht designs to his credit. The name follows traditional Aston Martin nomenclature evident in the Vantage, Virage, Vanquish and Volante models, but goes far beyond semantics with a raft of design elements familiar to the British automaker's svelte GTs: the grille shape has been interpreted into the windshield, the side vents into hull portals, the center console into a cabin access hatch.
The result isn't just a boat inspired by Aston Martins, but an Aston Martin designed for the water. We're already imagining Daniel Craig pulling up in San Tropez or Monte Carlo in this bad boy for a future flick, but until that day, you can check out the high-resolution images in the gallery for a closer look and the press release after the jump.Continue reading Aston Martin boat concept takes Bond off-shore Aston Martin boat concept takes Bond off-shore originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 10 Oct 2011 07:58:00 EST. Let there be no mistake made about it: Aston Martin is not only the coolest automotive marque, but also the coolest brand overall. At least in the United Kingdom.
For the fifth time in six years, the British automaker has topped the list compiled by the CoolBrands Council. The annual contest starts with a list of some 10,000 brands, then whittles it down to a 1,500-name "shortlist" before the top 500 are identified.
Near the top of the list were brands like Apple and Bang & Olufsen (which just happens to furnish the audio systems in many of Aston's models), but they were all beaten out for the top spot yet again by the House that David Brown Built. "What you are about to see is a fantasy. It has no place in the real world."
That's how the latest trailer for Forza Motorsport 4 begins, and when a video game trailer needs that kind of warning, you know things are about to get good.
And then Jeremy Clarkson's voiceover begins, telling us all that we're an endangered species. We, in this case, are those who consider themselves to be automotive enthusiasts. And there's video to back up this assertion, as a man (in the back seat of an economy car, no less) sits in traffic seemingly on his way to work (All it's missing is REM's "Everybody Hurts" - Ed).
Fear not, petrolheads. Soon, a waiting Aston Martin DB9 is fired up, tires squeal and smoke and our protagonist finds himself wildly escaping the confines of the city and its traffic. But wait. What's that? Uh oh, the local constabulary has caught on to our man's actions, and they aren't pleased. He's trapped. Again.
The moral of the story? Get your kicks where it's legal: in your living room, on your xBox 360, playing Forza 4. Thanks, Jeremy, for the friendly reminder. Check out the video for yourself after the break, where you'll also find an accompanying press release.

If you have, like us, been salivating at the notion of a new generation of Maybach and Lagonda ultra-luxury crafts built by Aston Martin, we've got some bad news: According to reports emanating from Germany, talks between AML and Daimler have broken down.
The proposal under negotiation would have seen Daimler outsourcing production of the next family of Maybach models to Aston Martin, which in return would benefit from Mercedes-Benz platforms and engines - not only for its svelte GTs, but also for its own future Lagonda line of limousines and luxury SUVs. That, and a boatload of money - or at least that's what AML was reportedly seeking, an issue that served as the stumbling block over which the deal reportedly collapsed.
That's not to say the two parties couldn't still reach some sort of a compromise, but short of that, Daimler may opt to either shut down Maybach altogether, find another partner, or take another stab at building new models internally.Maybach and Aston Martin alliance talks fall apart originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 27 Sep 2011 11:29:00 EST. Call it practical, call it luxurious, or call it a thinly veiled dilution of a legendary marque. -Whatever you want to call the Aston Martin Cygnet, at the end of the day, there are apparently a sizable number of customers lining up to drop the approximate equivalent of $50,000 on the tarted-up Toyota iQ. So many, in fact, that Autocar has learned that Aston can hardly keep its supply up with the demand.
The thing is that Aston takes its time building each Cygnet, receiving the chassis from Toyota and trimming them out to order to suitably Aston Martin levels of sumptuous fit and finish. Which sounds nice and all, but apparently customers are less keen to wait to have theirs built than they would be to simply drive one home from the dealership on the spot.
As far as we can recall, Cygnet models were only supposed to be sold to owners of other Aston Martin vehicles, so presumably this demand isn't just the result of regular (if well-heeled) consumers deciding to trade in their current car over something like a Mini Cooper Goodwood.Aston Martin can't build Cygnet fast enough to keep up with demand originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 21 Sep 2011 11:00:00 EST. Aston Martin Racing hasn't had much success with their factory LMP1 program, finishing outside the top ten in their European Le Mans Series races this year and completing only a couple laps in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. This past weekend, Aston Martin did manage to create a bright spot in its racing season with an overall victory at the six-hour ALMS race at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca this past weekend. The 007 car drove to a commanding three-lap victory ahead of the Dyson Racing Mazda-powered Lola. The first place finish was the first overall ALMS victory for Aston Martin and the first for a British racing team.
While the Aston Martin may have won the race, Dyson Racing earned even more accolades by capturing the LMP1 class championship with its second-place finish at Laguna Seca. This is Dyson's first team championship since it earned the LMP675 crown in 2003. The BMW/RLL Team of Joey Hand and Dirk Müller also claimed the team championship in the GT class with their second place finish. Aston Martin's presence at the Frankfurt Motor Show is rather limited, but one of the models taking center stage is a new addition to the DBS family. It's called the DBS Carbon Edition, and it's a continuation of the Carbon Black that was introduced in 2009. Now, however, you have a few more options with regards to the exterior color of your spy mobile.
The Aston Martin DBS was available in all colors... literally all of them, meaning you could only get it in black. This time around your choices have expanded, and Aston Martin is offering the new DBS Carbon Edition in Flame Orange or Ceramic Grey. The original black variety is included as well.
On the outside of the Carbon Edition, carbon fiber is used on the fascia, along with the outside mirrors and carbon fiber dash. This process alone is one of the many reasons why the Aston Martin DBS Carbon Edition will set you back $287,576 for the coupe or $302,576 for the convertible, which Aston prefers to call the Volante. If you've got that kind of coin set aside, you can plunk it down and expect your exclusive Bond ride to arrive in the beginning of 2012.Continue reading Aston Martin unveils DBS Carbon models Aston Martin unveils DBS Carbon models originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 15 Sep 2011 08:57:00 EST. Aston Martin makes beautiful cars. There's no argument there as this is an automotive fact. The Milan, Italy-based Zagato design house, however, can take any car and make it mobile art. It's done just that with the Aston Martin V12 Zagato, a limited-edition show stopper that makes our hearts hurt here in Frankfurt.
Why the heartache? We don't have the necessary £330,000 to buy one. That figure works out to roughly $522,000 U.S. greenbacks, and once you hear the noise this car makes you'll feel a bit better about the pricetag. It also helps that Aston Martin and Zagato will only build 150 examples in total. Production is slated to start in the summer of 2012, which means we have an awful lot of lawns to mow to get ready.
We were expecting that the show car displayed here in Frankfurt would be the production-ready model, but what we had instead was the same example that was shown at Villa d'Este and Pebble Beach, and raced at the Nurburgring. Only this one did away with the spoiler in favor of a new trunk lid. And maybe some new wheels. Check it out for yourself in our gallery of live shots for a closer look. When Aston Martin rolls in to Frankfurt next month for the first auto show of the season, it will have the largest display the company has ever mounted at a car show. And among them will be a roadgoing version of the V12 Zagato that will see production.
Well, almost, but not quite. Aston will actually be displaying two examples of the coachbuilt special in Frankfurt, which are, as best we can tell, the only two it's built to date. They're called Zig and Zag, and they're the two vehicles it raced at the Nürburgring to show what they were made of. Zig was built specifically to race and will be displayed in its full competition trim. Zag is the vehicle that wowed the crowds and the judges at Villa d'Este and was then converted to full race spec as well.
That second vehicle will now be converted back - in appearance, at least - to roadgoing trim to give us a glimpse at what the half-million-dollar coachbuilt supercar will look like when it reaches customers' garages. It'll also be the first time the car is shown at a major auto show, although we recently spent some time with it at Pebble Beach.
